Storage Under the Companionway.....

I couldn't stand seeing all of that area behind the companionway going to waste so built a ...



...unit that takes advantage of the space and still comes out....




...quickly so that we still have fast access to the Perkins under that area and also provides more...



...counter space when needed.

Now I'll need to make something similar for the Mac.

...that gives us a place for a 2 1/2 gallon drinking water dispenser and you will find that on the same index page.,

Cool idea. But, I would drill finger holes in the top edges of those drawer fronts to use as "drawer-pulls", to avoid those little handles catch people's toes. Also, how do you get to the electrical panel?

The drawers actually recess...



...a fair ways back under the steps so the handles haven't been a problem.

There is a cut-out on the side where...




...you sit at the Nav. Station to get to the switches and we used that after the storage unit went in and while we were on the boat last spring/summer.

When we return to the boat all of those circuits will go to a new switch panel by the Nav. Station with additional circuits. We will leave the old panel but it will be non-functional.

Clever.. but do you find yourself toe-stubbing the drawer fronts going up and down the companionway? We have a similar ladder and there's no way our feet don't extend beyond the tread as we use it...

We used it for over a month before leaving the boat with no problems. The treads are pretty deep on the steps and the extra storage and counter space was really nice.

I'm sure it won't work in all cases, but the drawers could be set further in depending on the situation. We plan on doing something similar on the smaller Mac,

That's where the Perkins is or just above it and I do like the looks of it even if it isn't seen now. The switches were still operative, but the gauge wasn't,

You might want to add pin stops to the back walls of the drawers so they cannot come all the way out unless you want them to do so as well as locking pins to hold them closed. I have seen more than one boat with the contents of its drawers and lockers dumped out in rough seas.

I think we will be ok as the drawers are on ....



...the glides where they stop and the knobs are handy and easy to use to keep the drawers in place. We mainly have light food in them like bread and chips and so forth but depending on how the drawers are made and how they slide that might be good idea for one to consider,

Fantastic idea. I've been eyeing the same thing although my space is drastically smaller. I'd be building a better box for the battery under the lower step and a small drawer under the top step. If I did this that would be the only drawer in the boat..

Any concern with corrosion on those drawer slides? Is that stainless hardware? There is going to be water coming in that area from feet, rain etc.
