GPS III vs Standard H 150 chartplotter

I am looking for an upgraded gps with map to integrate with a autohelm 1000 tiller autopilot. The Garmin GPS III is portable and can be used in the cockpit, but lacks the charting capability of the entry level Standard Horizon 150 chartplotter. I am thinking I should get the GPS III now and wait until I upgrade to a bigger boat and get a quality chartplotter, and use the GPS III as a backup. Any ideas ?

I would say it depends on the size of your boat. If you have a good Nav station you may want to do like I''m doing. I have the GIII also, I plan to using it to interface with my notebook computer and chart software. The but another for the cockpit.

I like the idea of ahving another device when one takes a crap.
