Lewmar maintenance

I have a pair of older Lewmar #16 msingle-speed self-tailing winches. They have a bottom cover held in by a large spring-ring.

Can anyone advise how to disassemble?

Thanks,

Rob

LEWMAR 16 WINCHES:
No tools are required to service a curent Lewmar winch. Unscrew the top cap with your fingers to remove the needle peen drum and provide access to the centre stem. To mount winch, remove the needle peen drum for access to the deck fitting holes.
Pre-Ocean Series Winches require Manual 6 (March 85).
Ocean Series requires Manual 7 (May 85).

Lewmar maintenance

I had the same problem a few months ago. Info on the newer lewmar winches can be found on their website, but not for older models. Went to a local rigging shop that has some lewmar stuff, and he just happened to have some sheets of paper describing how to get apart the self-tailing ones: The top part of the self-tailing mechanism unscrews counter-clockwise - you may need to take a piece of wood, hold it against the piece of metal that leads the line into the self-tailing mechanism and give it a rap with a hammer to loosen it. Make sure you knock it it the proper direction! After that, it''s a piece of cake.

old Lewmar winch

Hi, Thermal,

Do you still have the sheet of paper describing how to disassemble and service your old Lewmar 16 winch? Can you describe how to remove it for servicing? Ours is on a Catalina 36, probably the original from 1982, and we've tried unscrewing it from the underside of the cabin top. We can't get one of the 5 nuts off the bolt. We'll hacksaw it off, if we have to, but ... then what??

Thanks for any help you can give me.

CaptKathy:
I have an old lewmar service manual with an exploded view of the #16ST. I could fax it to you. Let me know the number.

ratchet gear on Lewmar winch is toast

Thanks very much Bill.

Looks like our ratchet gear is completely toast. Given the age of this winch (almost 30 years) and the paucity of repair parts, I think we're in the market for a new or used one.

Very helpful to have.

PS: I am going to try to delete or edit the fax phone number in my previous post in case some spam bot picks it up.

Lewmar 16ST parts?

I need a ratchet gear from an old Lewmar 16 winch, either single speed or two speed. Vintage 1980, likely from the early standard or the holdfast series. I have lots of inquiries out via Internet, wonder if anyone has an old one lying around collecting dust?
