Rubbing Compound Question???
Just bought a C&C 35 this fall. Overall great condition, but definitely in need of a buff. Medium oxidation (in my non-expert opinion). Now my question - what's the best product for this?

I went into my yacht yard's ship store looking for 3M Rubbing Compound. The guy working there suggested, and sold me on "3M Imperial Compound and Finishing Material" Does this provide the proper cut for my needs? I am not wetsanding before hand. Will I need to a polish to finish the job after using this product? What is the difference between this and normal Rubbing Compound.

Thank you

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???
Do yourself a favor and read this thread.

Then send Mainesail a PM 'cause you are gonna want to thank him.

Edit to add, forget the 3M stuff and order the Presta he mentions. I tried both and while Maine Sail might be able to get good results with 3M my experience was very frustrating. The Presta product worked fantastic.

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???

I followed Mainesailes advice to the T and it worked wonders. Get the Mikita as it makes a huge difference.

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???
hill, 3M is one of the finest companies in the world when it comes to answering the telephone. Call the toll-free number on the back label of any bottle, they'll connect you to a product specialist who knows all of their "finishing" products in depth, and they can tell you specifically what grit the product is, and why one or the other is better.

3M makes great stuff, and they're equally great about telling you how to use which ones.

That and Mainesail's thread, which is outstanding.

I've polished a couple thousand cars and a few boats. Mainesail's thread is good, listen to him.

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???
I personally don't like the 3M one step compound and polish. I found it more difficult to work and remove. Several detailers in my marina use it and like it, I get better results with the more traditional compound and two steps of polish (all 3M) but it is more time consuming. Mainsail's post explains all the steps pretty well.

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???
Another rave for the Presta products--absolutely worth it. Besides working well, they rinse out of the pads easily with water. MaineSail's instructions are, of course, excellent.

Re: Rubbing Compound Question???
Thanks guys! Mainesails instructions are fantastic. I gather from the SJ34 that the answer to my question is that the Imperial is supposed to be a sort of one step compound and polish. I'm probably not as anal as Mainesail, but I planned on three steps anyway. Good thing I saved the reciept! I'lll inquire about presta at the ship's store. :)
