Replacing wind machine - running cable down the mast?

I have a keel stepped mast and would like to replace the ancient and defunct IMI wind machine. What I am wondering about is the practicality of getting the new cable down the mast. Has anyone tried and succeeded without dropping the mast? Hopefully I could use the old cable to pull the new one through - maybe.

Just wondering what other people's experience has been. Christmas is coming up and the Maretron device looks nice to me...

Mark,

I just looked at the Maretron device and it it interesting do you know of anyone using this. I have the Raymarine ST60+ wind

As far as the cable. If you have amessenger cable installed that owuld work, pulling it through using the old cable could work.

Is your mast keel stepped?
Where is the outlet for the mast wires? Headliner or base of mast or on the deck.
Are the wires in a conduit?
Are they all bundled together every few feet ( VHF, lights, wind instrument cable)?
Is there foam in your mast?

This will help in determining whether you can use existing or drop a wire down the mast/ conduit.

Also do you have a chartplotter and is it NMEA2000. Looks like the Maretron runs on that so you may need a gateway converter.

I've just read some good reviews on here of the Maretron device.

I have an NMEA 2000 network with a chartplotter, Garmin GMI 10 display, and Airmar DST800 that all share data. I think I'd get another MFD for the wind data although I'm not sure yet which one.

The mast is keel stepped yes, and the wires come out at the mast base. What I'm not sure is how they are retained in the mast - will try and find out.
