Windex vs. anemometer opinions...

Hey All,
All the electronic instruments on my boat are original and the sending units beyond help. A new depth gauge is cheap and speed can be covered by the chartplotter/gps program.
The issue is that the prices of anemometer sending units are just plain crazy

Keeping in mind that this year will be daysailing in the bay and getting familiar with this boat here is my question:
Is it worth the $$$ or do most just use the windex anyhow? I have sailed with an anemometer and found myself just looking up at the windex while trimming.

What say you??

Re: Windex vs. anemometer opinions...

You don't mention which Bay you're sailing. I sailed on Barnegat Bay for many years with only a windex and though I now have both wind speed/direction and boat speed sensors, the windex still gets plenty of use. So, I would say, if money is tight just use the windex. You can buy a handheld anemometer, if wind speed is something you think you must know.

Boat speed given from a GPS is speed over ground. To get speed through the water you would need another sensor. The difference is the effect of any current present. You can obtain a trailing knotmeter..I have one on the boat as a backup but I forget who makes it.
IF you don't sail where there are strong currents, you should be fine with the GPS..

Narragansett Bay and the currents can be strong at times so a speed log may be in order. I never really thought that speed over ground vs. actual would screw me up.

Agree with Tempest.. we've had wind instruments and still looked at the windex anyhow.. I'd be putting the money towards solar or a new sail. We have a handheld anemometer if we really need to know the windspeed beyond what we're feeling.

Woudn't say it will 'screw you up'... for estimating time remaining SOG is actually more useful. Boat speed through the water is more important when gauging sail trim and how well the boat is going. Having both allows you to quantify the actual current conditions.

Re: Windex vs. anemometer opinions...

Good input so far....I am really just wanting to keep all my $$$ low on this boat so if I want to flip it in a couple of years I can get it back.

Feel free to keep blasting opinions out though, I enjoy hearing them all.

If you, like most of us, are on a budget then there might be better places to spend your money.

If you plan on racing or doing some serious cruising then maybe it would be worth it.

You will never get a dime of that money back when you sell the boat.

Check ebay for used stuff - Sandy made a lot of scrap.

Re: Windex vs. anemometer opinions...

Watching the windex while sailing downwind for any distance is a real pain in the neck.

Certified...in several regards...

I've never had fancy wind instruments, and sometimes not even a Windex if a fat bird decided he needed a place to sit!

Just go with a Windex. I'll just bet that you have a smartphone. If so, download the "WindAlert" app. It's free, and will tell you the wind direction and intensity from the windstations and NOAA bouys nearest to your location.

Here on the Chesapeake, there is cell coverage the whole length of the Bay.

Good tip on the app....I didn't even think of that
