I didn't get my boat till late in the year. Kind of hacked my way through set up to get it up and sailing. This included lashing the main clew to the boom. I am sure there is a proper way to use the existing hardware. Just keep thinking there is something missing, eg. some type bail or something to tension the foot. I took a few pictures hoping someone might recognize the setup and offer a few pointers.

The aft-most block and the clam cleat ahead of it are for your outhaul.. it should run from the padeye opposite, through the clew cringle on the sail, back and through the block to the cleat. I expect the padeye on top of the boom aft is for a topping lift.

The other two blocks (each with a padeye opposite) would be for the mainsail clew reefing lines. The block and cleat near the gooseneck may be a tack reef or more likely a cunningham adjustment.

What boat is this on?

It is on an Abbott 22 Faster. Should the main clew be shackled off or just tied off with the 1/4 inch line? I guess I was expecting a straight pull on the main's clew. The cheek block on the goose neck end has no rivets in the holes; but it is tight. Not sure what was going on there.

There should have been a 'slug' attached to the clew that slid into the groove on top of the boom.. that would have kept the clew from lifting off, then the outhaul applies the foot tension. If that's missing then a clew strap would be needed. Like so:

For a bit of extra power you could double your outhaul as shown in that picture too..

Faster, do you like to have a block at the clew? I don't, and all the friction makes it hard to adjust the outhaul.

It depends on the purchase of the outhaul.. I don't have a block on the clew itself but we have a 6:1 internal purchase. On smaller boats with a singlepart external outhaul (like the above example) a good bearing block should reduce friction.
