OMC Saildrive engine loss of power

I have an OMC saildrive engine (circa 1980) that runs great in neutral, accelerates to high revs very smoothly. When I move it into forward, I cannot get full power out of it. Occassionally while underway, it will pick up power and run like it used to. I have checked the prop and it is clean. Fuel filter is also clean as are spark plugs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

OMC Zephyr sail drive loss of power

Aside from the obvious bad fuel or bad mixture you might also want to check the water intake to make sure it is not obstructed. The water intake is located forward of the propeller on the bottom of the drive and the and the water supply valve is located just above the drive unit mounting plate below the air silencer. Good luck let me know if this helps. Often times bad fuel or mixture will result in carbonizing even new plugs to the point that new fuel doesn't seem to correct the problem.

Check the color on the spark plugs and if they are white (like brand new) you might try change the fuel filter.

I hope the OP from seven years ago was not waiting for the replies from today.

It is one of those "I am my own Grandpa" kind of science fiction loops where you go back in time and meet your grandmother as a young girl who turns out to be your wife ......
