Re: Where do you keep your owner's manuals/info?

If you can close your eyes and get past the purchase price of a NeatScan or Fujitsu ScanSnap, they really chew through a lot of pages in short order, scanning both sides at once and generating a searchable PDF file. There are some differences in how they work and compatibilities, but the only thing they lack is a papershredder attachment for dead filing.

I prefer paper manuals, but having a scanned copy as backup, reference, second location, can be priceless. The downside on a boat is that if you're trying to fix something that ate all your power...Yeah, paper works better when the batteries are down.

Better yet- find friends who own a nice industrial scanner...

But, the idea is a good one and an efficient use of time. Previous posts about making a few copies of commonly used manuals is also worth doing, for those dirty jobs.

I also like the hard copies. The originals of all equipment is in a divided accordion folder at home. Copies are in a three ring binder on the boat. Using copies makes it possible to get manuals in different sizes to be either blown up or reduced in the copying process so all are uniform. There is a table of contents at the beginning of the binder with numbered tabs to separate and make it easy to find the manual needed.

Re: Where do you keep your owner's manuals/info?

I store my manuals in 2 large binders, either held in plastic sleeves or 3-hole-punched.
I seperated the manuals between equipment that's attached to the boat, and that which isn't. That division seems arbitrary but it equalizes the volume each binder has to hold and I know right away which one to look in. The binders, boat book & maintanance log, engine manuals all go into a waterproof plastic file box like HyLyte's.
I seem to use the manuals a lot, so I keep the file box on the cabin sole or on a settee, or on the galley counter, or the nav desk--or anywhere I can find it easily by tripping over it.
But it's important to have digital copies, too, so you can print any that get soaked.

Re: Where do you keep your owner's manuals/info?

I have hardcopies in (3) 3 ringed binders but I have a complete set on my iPad. I had to scan a few of the manuals but it is well worth it. In EVERY use of my manuals so far I have gone to the iPad. I find it is soo much easier to find the right manual when using the iPad. I have yet to find a need for the hard copy version. I will go another six months in this mode. If I don't use the hard copies in that period I am going to vacuum pack the binders and store them away to the deep bowels of the boat. I can't get myself to remove them from the boat but I would like to free up convenient storage areas for other things. I also keep a digital copy of all the manuals on my laptop which I rarely use on the boat.

I have a very basic iPad 1 that someone gave to me. One of the most useful technologies that I have ever owned, and it was free! You can get an iPad 1 very cheap these days. Thinking of getting another one just for redundancy. I also use it for Active Captain on getting the latest on anchorages and marina reviews, handy. AC also has tides and current almanac which I use on occasion.
