how do I remove the impellor housing from a yamaha 9.9? it won't come out...

I'm trying to change the gasket between the impellor housing and the lower unit. I also would like to change the seals on the actual drive shaft, where they meet the impellor housing.

As you can see from the pics, I can lift the impellor housing up about 1/4" before it stops and can't go further. It can spin freely on the axis of the drive shaft, however it appears that the drive shaft is what is blocking it from actually coming off. Do I need to remove the driveshaft to get the housing off? If so, how do I remove it, and how do I get the seals off the driveshaft where it meets the housing?

Thx for any help!

Looks like maybe there is just enough corrosian on the shaft to not let the housing slip over it? You might try dressing down the shaft? If you pull the shaft out of the gear housing you might have trouble getting it re-aligned? Last resort, maybe?

Does the manual call it that ?

This is more or less a typical water pump other than some are plastic

On a mercury the black thing is the seal holder and it slips right out as its rubber

Your kind of digging into gearbox now and need to proceed with a bit more guidance from a manual as part #17 is holding some important stuff in place so it is easy to get in trouble about right now

For example on a Gen II lower you pull the shift shaft right out BUT IF you do it on a GEN I (older style) you have to tear down the entire lower-unit to fix that mistake

Yeah I'm concerned about opening up that gear box. The whole lower unit must have been left in the water at some point by the PO so there's corrosion everywhere, and I can't even get the prop shaft out because the seal between the lower unit and the metal retainin part is completely corroded. I might be able to bang it off eventually, but prob not without breaking the aluminum and then having to order new parts, again.

Can o'worms for sure...

I really only need to replace the seal, I wonder if there is some way of cutting it, wrapping it around the shaft then somehow gluing it back together therefore not having to get this stupid thing off in the first place?

Maybe I just need to buy the shop manual, which costs more than all the parts I ordered for this motor together unfortunately...

"Seal" or "gasket"? If the gasket, maybe clean the surfaces as best as you can and use Permatex orange silicone based gasket sealer, put lots of it on
and just barely snug it down. Then after a day or two, re-torque to specs. I would be reluctant to pull the shaft out of the gearbox unless you have nothing to lose.
