Dorade boxes???

Ahoy....Only 48 days till' Spring...LOL

I have these two lexan deadlights (for lack of a better term) on my deck and was wondering if it would be worth installing a couple of dorade boxes with vents?
One of them is leaking so I will have to mess with them anyway but I would like opinions on functionality and if you think that I will clutter my deck on this small 27 footer.

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Re: Dorade boxes???

Properly done, dorades can be really helpful on the ventilation front. We have molded in versions that work well except sometimes we can get quite a cold draft down from the windward facing cowl (our dorades are just above the aft ends of the settees)

Your location is somewhat problematic in that if you place them where your deadlights are they will be prone to catching jibsheets mid-tack and so should have some proper guards installed as well, adding to the cost of the change.

Re: Dorade boxes???

Three inch day/night solar vents could prove very useful. They will of course limit the amount of light you can get through the dead lights if that is a consideration although you can "off-center" the vents somewhat. We have been using solar vents since the late 80's and have been very glad to have them.

FWIW...

The guards typically look like this.. if the two are close enough together you might get away with a single guard structure if that doesn't cause other issues:

No offense to those that have the these guards but on my small boat it just wouldn't look right.

I think that saw a shot of your boat on another thread and I could hardly notice the guards. If you have a pic of the deck I would appreciate it if you could throw it up.

You have no problem with you sheets getting fouled on a tack?

Thanks
