Thanks Stumble - very good points and food for thought. Maybe I should just use this space as a wine cellar, but I'd probably have to get airline bottle sizes to fit!

One of the better uses of this type of space I have seen was as bulk storage. The owner got some plastic milk crates, cut them to fit, then filled them with all sorts of stuff like vaccume sealed rice, flour, pasta, toilet paper, ect. The floor boards were then made positive lock types so they wouldn't fly out when healed.

It added a huge amount of useful storage, the plastic allowed water to drain to the bilge, and the vaccume bags kept everything dry and safe, if a bit funky on the outside from time to time.
