Looking for pictures...

I just bought parts for my 9.9 4-stroke. I'm replacing the carburetor and fresh water impeller. I'm looking for a few pictures that might help me avoid silly, first timer mistakes.

In order to help, we'll need to know the Make & Model of the OB.

I did a rebuild of my 31 year old Evinrude last season and had it running almost like I knew what I was doing. I got the Clymer's manual and the parts from
Outboard Motors, Boat Parts, Marine Engines, Inboard Boat Motor

Ah; meant to include that.
The engine is a Honda 9.9 think it was purchased in the late 90s. I'm not completely clear on the model number, the parts store used the motor ID: BABJ1300292.

I got started on the motor today and I can’t say things went well. The pictures from the Honda shop manual are pretty cool, step by step (for the carburetor) and a few shots of the impeller replacement too. Well first bad sign was when I noticed that the inboard and outboard gaskets were marked “do not reuse” in the illustrations. Called all over looking for them till finally the guy up in Everett suggested that I just be REAL careful taking em off. I did that and was feeling better. Then I got to the part where I was starting to transfer hardware from the old carb to the new one and found out that they sold me the wrong part.

Ah well, at least I’ve got that task almost half done… AND I’ll be able to get new gaskets, a fuel filter and an oil filter while I’m in there.

So after a fair break, I tackled the impeller replacement. I got confused cause I thought the impeller mounted down by the prop. The steps say to take off the prop and the prop shaft holder and the gear case assembly I didn’t have pictures of the pages that detail how to remove those last two, so I kind of winged it. I removed the prop and then the 5 bolts that seemed to be holding on the lowest “chunk” of the lower unit. When I removed these, after a bit of banging, it dropped down…. Maybe 2 inches…. And then kind of hangs there.

So now I’ve got the bottom of the motor dangling there and I don’t want to use any force cause I don’t want to break anything. In looking at the pictures again, I just realized that the 2 inch gap that I opened up is giving me access to the impeller housing and the four bolts that secure it. So I feel like I’m close to being on track, but I’d sure feel better if I’d done this before. I’m not sure if the gear case assembly is the part that I have dangling or not. Guess I’ll see what happens if I remove those four bolts tomorrow. Or who knows, I sprayed the whole thing with “nut cracker” before I quit for the day, maybe the whole thing will be laying on the floor tomorrow 

For this level of service, there's no substitute for having the real paper shop manual there to guide you. In my first post, there is a link to buy one direct from Honda (free shipping) and is money well spent. Getting it apart is one thing, but getting it all back together is a lot easier when you have step-by-step instructions and illustrations. Best $39 you'll spend and makes DIY service a LOT easier.
