Tach

Just purchased a new, for us, 1983 S2 with a 35hp Universal. Haven't even had her out yet. Started the engine the other day and noticed that the tachometer was working. Opened the engine compartment and found a wire laying there. Pulled the control panel in the cockpit and saw that the same color wire ran to the back of the tach. I cannot find where the end in the engine compartment attaches to the alternator. Any incites???

Re: Tach

Is there any label next to the connection on the tach sider ? You mentioned the tach works - does it have a light bulb on it and is it still working?

Re: Tach

PAULCRI The Universal operators manual will have a wiring diagram, Go to Westerbeke.com to download one. Universal 35 is a good engine.

Re: Tach

On a diesel it most likely was attached to the alternator tach post. If the alternator has been replaced with an aftermarket(GM single wire high output) it might not have had a tach post, as my replacement did not have. BUT, check the wiring diagram before assuming anything. You can always take the alternator to an automotive electronics rebuild shop and have a post added, don't know the cost though.

Re: Tach

The tach isn't working. I mis-typed my original question. That is my problem, I cannot find a 'tach' post on the alternator and after thinking, a unique experience, I cannot expect anyone to know what alternator is in here. Thanks all for your replies, I will muddle through.

Re: Tach

Is it painted the same color as the engine? Also are there several wire running to it or just one.

Re: Tach

Torrensen aka marine diesel direct may have even been the supplier of that engine to S-2. They have all the schematics on line. Also they have a great knowledgeable staff, a bit pricy but I have been happy with their service.

Re: Tach

Not all tach's take the signal off the alternator.
Some take it off the flywheel.
Check your manual.
