Tach

Just purchased a new, for us, 1983 S2 with a 35hp Universal. Haven't even had her out yet. Started the engine the other day and noticed that the tachometer was working. Opened the engine compartment and found a wire laying there. Pulled the control panel in the cockpit and saw that the same color wire ran to the back of the tach. I cannot find where the end in the engine compartment attaches to the alternator. Any incites???

Is there any label next to the connection on the tach sider ? You mentioned the tach works - does it have a light bulb on it and is it still working?

PAULCRI The Universal operators manual will have a wiring diagram, Go to Westerbeke.com to download one. Universal 35 is a good engine.

On a diesel it most likely was attached to the alternator tach post. If the alternator has been replaced with an aftermarket(GM single wire high output) it might not have had a tach post, as my replacement did not have. BUT, check the wiring diagram before assuming anything. You can always take the alternator to an automotive electronics rebuild shop and have a post added, don't know the cost though.

The tach isn't working. I mis-typed my original question. That is my problem, I cannot find a 'tach' post on the alternator and after thinking, a unique experience, I cannot expect anyone to know what alternator is in here. Thanks all for your replies, I will muddle through.

Is it painted the same color as the engine? Also are there several wire running to it or just one.

Torrensen aka marine diesel direct may have even been the supplier of that engine to S-2. They have all the schematics on line. Also they have a great knowledgeable staff, a bit pricy but I have been happy with their service.

Not all tach's take the signal off the alternator.
Some take it off the flywheel.
Check your manual.
