Icebox with no drain hole in the bottom??

We have a drain line, with refrigeration, and only use contained ice or frozen meat if we want to help supplement the fridge for longer trips... Even with minimal 'drippage' through that line every couple of years it gets REALLY smelly if it's not cleaned/cleared regularly. If it plugs up with anything, things can really fester in there and the operative word will be 'GROSS!!'....

The Bavaria we just chartered had a hose run to the bottom and a manually activated pump. I didn't like it.

It might be better to find a modern cooler that will fit inside the old ice box. Pull it out and take the left overs home with you. Clean it and pack it at home. Great for the weekend.

I'd not really want an icebox without a drain. I have two, the one in the galley, and the ever more important beer-sized one in the cockpit. I am going to try to think of how to drain them some other place than the bilge though. It does get stinky.

Have you ever had a milk carton/bottle leak? Have you ever spilled something sweet or sticky in the frig? Do you really want spilled milk etc. in your bilge?

No hole is a very nice feature once you've had an liquid accident. You only have to clean the frig, not the bilge.

The door to the icebox, which is flush in the middle of my galley counter, doesn't seal completely, so anything that I spill while cooking or cleaning gets into the icebox. If I had a drain that went to the bilge, it would end up there next. So, I guess from my experiences so far, I like that there isn't a drain in the icebox. Clean up is simpler.

Have you ever looked into using dry ice? Some supermarkets around here carry it.
