Lewmar winch needs line gauge reduction

Hello Everyone

I am working on an 1987 Nuator Swan 46

It has a large number of Lewmar winches.

These winches have the following problem.

Since the winches where built, rope (line) technology has advanced to the point where the thicker one inch rope is no longer required.

the previous owner has gone ahead and replaced a bunch of the one inch line with 3/4 inch line, however the self tailing mechanism one the inches is still designed to accomodate 1 inch line. This means that the self tailing mechanism does not work a lot of the time.

Is anyone aware of a kit to replace the self tailer with a narrower one?

Lewmar themselves where no help and recommended we replace the winches.

We where thinking of taking the aluminum inserts to a machine shop and getting them shaved down.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Any known solutions?

Thank you

Andreas

Re: Lewmar winch needs line gauge reduction

You might need to replace the top end with what Lewmar is now calling it's 'wavespring' jaws, they self adjust due to spring tension.
Or, if you are lucky you can just get a new jaw kit
Winches products

Like ropes, winches have changed in the last 25 years

Lessons learned are opportunities earned.

Re: Lewmar winch needs line gauge reduction

I got in touch with Lewmar, and they stated that there are no parts to serve this purpose available for winches of this vintage...

We are left with trying to find a machine shop that is willing to thin the inner parts...

If anyone can recommend a good machine shop in the Caribean let me know

We will be in the virgin islands and st martin first.
