Left handed or right handed max prop
I want to change the pitch of my max prop. Is there an easy way to figure out if the it rotates left or right with the boat hauled out? The PO says it's a left handed prop but I would like to make sure.

Re: Left handed or right handed max prop
I bet Max Prop themselves would be able to tell you from a database of your boat/motor. They are incredibly helpful. PYI, inc. actually. They may even have some input on pitch settings for your boat.

I'm thinking, however, that you can hand turn the shaft and see the blades twist and tell which direction that are setting up to propel the boat. I know I move the prop all the time on the hard, but I'm trying to recall whether it will react to moving the shaft. I'm 99% sure that direction of rotation, btw, is when looking from the stern toward the prop, but be sure that is right when you are looking up setting.

While I would not personally rely on this, if you know the prop walk, you should also know the direction of rotation. The prop would be turning in reverse, like a wheel rolling over the ground in the direction of the prop walk. (I think, its early :) )

Re: Left handed or right handed max prop
When you put the boat in forward, check the roatation of the shaft. If it's clockwise, then it's a right handed prop.

Their prop manual PDF is on line. It's a great document. If you're repitching you'll have to disassemble the prop anyhow, you can check the assembly arrangement markings to see if it's built RH or LH.

Facing forward looking at your gearbox output, if it's rotating CW in fwd gear you'll need a RH prop

Re: Left handed or right handed max prop
Hello Brokesailor, here in this youtube vid Fred shows you how to determine the rotation of your two or three blade Max-Prop.

*edit* hmmm it seems I have to have more than 10 posts to be able to put links in my posts. If you still want to view the vid search for "Max-Prop: Determing the rotation of your Max-Prop" in youtube and it should be the first or second vid that appears.

Looking from the stern of the boat forward, so looking behind the propeller forward is how you determine the rotation.

1. Put the blades in a feathered position.
2. If you think it's a right hand rotation prop move the trailing edge to port. The straight leading edge will stop angled forward and to starboard.
3. If you think it's a left hand rotation grab the trailing edge of the blades and pull it to starboard. The blades will stop angled forward and to port for a left hand rotation.

If you have any questions feel free to give us a call, we'll be more than happy to help you out. (425) 355-3669 or (800) 523-7558

Broke.... do not hesitate to call them. They are terrific to work with. I had a ding repaired last year and some issues with being over pitched. They were very helpful.

Re: Left handed or right handed max prop
Have someone watch your prop while you do the following:

1: Put your transmission in forward.
2: Pull your engine stop lever and keep it pulled out.
3: Turn the key as if you're starting the engine for a couple seconds.

The engine will not start but the starter motor will rotate the prop. Have the person watching the prop note which way it turns.
