Resources for lifeline replacement?

Any suggestions for information (books, articles, webpages) on replacing lifelines? (In non-coated wire.) Seems like this would be a good DIY project, but I haven't found much detailed information. I'm especially interested in learning about the swageless fitting systems, but traditional system ok too.
Thanks in advance,

Re: Resources for lifeline replacement?

There really isn't much to research.... buy the wire, buy the fittings and do it. Norsenam and StaLoc fittings come with instructions.

There is a much discussed trend on SailNet regarding using dynema line in lieu of wire. IMO, there are pros and cons, but while the cost is somewhat lower by the time that you're done, the lines need replacing after a few years (4-5?).

IMO, since the swageless fittings are quite expensive compared with swaged fittings, it really isn't worth it to do it yourself with wire...and I say this as a dedicated DIYer. You DO NOT (repeat 3x) want to swage lifelines or standing rigging yourself. It takes specialized hydraulic tools that are costly.

I suggest or Knothead here on SailNet. Send them your old lifelines and new ones come in the mail. Well worth it.

I see more and more going to dyneema... will watch to see what the longevity turns out to be.. I like the look, and the thicker diameter is easier on the hands, along with never a meathook...
