Maybe there used to be a small swim platform attached to it on one side of the transom with a ladder that flipped underwater.

Do you have a picture of the stern rail above it? Like a bottom pice holding something on Reverse transom down on the bottom and also connected to the stern rail like some kind of pole? MOB pole. Radar pole, Wind instrument pole, MOB Lifesling, Ladder from stern rail connection?

Where is the ladder on this boat, on the side?

Anyone who examines these photos closely will observe that this is a strategically placed, heavy duty fitting that has had much use over the years...bringing one to the obvious conclusion that this
is undoubtedly the handle to the afternoon swim beer locker!
