mystery fitting

2 Attachment(s)
I have a mysterious fitting installed on the stern of my boat.

Would anyone know what it is there for?

Thanks

Florent

It is intended to be load bearing, but the angle is not good for a step. Is there anything above it? What kind of boat? Was it set up for crossing oceans?
In other words, I don't know.

Probably a step. In Canada they have made a means of boarding a boat from the water, mandatory equipment. I weld similar, but better braced such steps on my skegs and transoms, for boarding when the boarding ladder is not down.

With that little strut support there it must have been intended to hold some wieght.

A toe hold to help climbing out of the water?? but then I'd expect to see a couple more on the way up (though they could have hung a piece of rope over the transom.... a handhold for when you're cleaning the rudder while swimming?

Skookum fitting in an odd place otherwise..

Cheap POS for a step. I'm thinking a PO just screwed in whatever looked like it could be used as a towing eye, for towing a small dink. Or at least, tying up as they came astern. Either way, the rust tells you it needs to be pulled.

Is there a hole or similar fitting on the rudder? Could be cable or chain attachment in case rudder drops.

I will go with emergency step. One would be all you should need to haul yourself up and out. That bit of rope with the knot, is that attached to the pushpit rail, if so may be part of the set up. Simple and effective.

Great inputs everyone, thanks.

One piece of info though, the rope has nothing to do with the setup, it's just some stuff I attached there for the haulout.

Could it have been put there to support the bottom of some kind of swim ladder?
