Better than a PFD. A wearable liferaft!!!

I've been designing something just like this in my spare time. Switlik has already done exactly what I had in mind. Check this puppy out. It's a solo liferaft that you can wear in a harness similar to how you wear a pfd. For the cold waters of the NW USA coast a PFD is generally just so that the coast guard can find your body. This puppy might give the MOB quite a bit of time.

I'm assuming you wiggle out of the harness before inflating, otherwise you'd better hope you deploy only when face up :)

6.2lbs doesn't sound like a lot until you have to wear it for several hours.

I was going to post exactly what Paul and cruisingdream said.... but I think I'll stay tethered to the boat and not go overboard. Neat idea, though.

For a solo sailor on a budget, maybe.

at 1k each not a good option for a crew of two.

Heavy and expensive, but a very interesting idea, nonetheless.

Interesting idea. I wonder how much heat loss there would still be. Looks like it would deploy with some water inside, and a single layer of plastic between your body and the cold water of the Salish Sea. Survival might be better (but not visibility from the air) in a gumby suit.

Edit: However, upon reading the link, they do provide a bailer.

From the drawing, it appears to have a beer koozie built in. That alone is a selling point.

As mentioned it could get cold. Also what is this;

Features
Streamlined sea anchor deployment allows canopy venting.

If it is sealed, O2 becomes an issue. If air can get it so can water.
Nice place to hide when the wife is looking you though.
