Another thing I meant to add, then forgot until I read some of these other posts;

If the halyard is very tight and the upper unit/bearings are worn it might bind, causing the halyard to try and wrap. Try playing with the tension.

Too loose will cause wrap.
Too tight can cause wrap or make it very hard to furl.

Of course changing the angle will probably cure both ills. But, until you can get the mast down or get up the mast, try experimenting with the tension.
