Where did this metal come from?

Here's a weird one! My cockpit drain was draining slowly.
I determined that the drain was clear, but the hose that vents the drain was plugged. When I disconnected the lower end of the vent hose (at a "Y" with the cockpit drain intake) a bunch of large rusty metal fragments fell out!
The upper end of the vent hose is connected to a fiberglass vent box that also serviced a blower for the Atomic 4 (which was replaced with a diesel, so the blower is no longer used).
The fragments look like iron, are magnetic and some are as large as a pea.
The first picture shows an overview of the blower and the vent box. The upper connection of the drain vent hose is circled in yellow.
The second picture shows the bottom of the blower (looking up from below)which is cracked (indicated by arrow).
The third picture shows some of the the metal fragments that were blocking the vent hose.
Any guess as to where the metal might have come from?
