Stanchion eye removal...

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everybody,

I need to take out the brass eye from a bent stanchion, but I can't remove the bolt/rivet/???. Does anyone know how to do it? I tried with a hammer and a pin, but it didn't work.

Thanks,
HP

Remove it using a drill bit

Horia,
Do you want to save the brass eye, or the bent stanchion, or both?
Have you put a screwdriver through the eye and tried to force it turn?
PB Blaster or similar penetrating oil might help, as might some heat from a torch.

If you don't care about the bent stanchion you could simply cut it away from the brass eye with a tool like a grinder.

Sounds to me as though your boat survived Sandy down in Gravesend Bay. I am glad to think this.

Is there a possibility that solder is involved in the bonds holding these parts fast? Can you apply some heat carefully with a propane torch?

From the picture it looks like that might be just a "dent" or crimp holding that together

Thank you guys, I'll try all of these methods.

Hey Caleb,
The boat was already at the "winter retreat", fortunately. It only got a few boo-boo's, here and there, including two bent stanchions.

Thanks again, everybody!

Around here the boats that were ashore took more of a beating than those on moorings. There are exceptions, however. My boat, which was on a mooring, was totalled when struck by a boat by a boat that had broken away.

We went through the exact issues after "KATRINA". We had the bronze eyes which we removed and used in new stainless tubing, the old having been bent. Our eyes were held in by what is called Roll Pins. They are stainless and a punch was used to remove them. They were very tight and had been there a long time. We ordered new pins on the net and replaced several.
