I am going to install a new water heater in my pearson 27. Has anyone done it before? The water heater is slightly larger than the Larette opening and I was wondering if any of the bulkheads came loose. Otherwise I'll have to take an 1/8" off each side of the hatch.
The water heaters today have more insulation than when the boat was made. Try a slightly smaller one. This comes up on the Pearson 28 list from time to time, but I don't remember what current heater is recommended. You could check the list (p28forum on yahoo groups).
I wouldn't cut the anything, it'll be hard to do that in a clean way that doesn't reduce boat value.
