which engine for repowering?

Am thinking seriously about repowering. My boat is fairly heavy(37000lbs) and would like
some opinions regarding engines. I''m looking for something close to 65-70 hp. Leaning towards Yanmar but also considering Perkins and Westerbeke. Thanks.

Which engine do you have now? Is it a V drive? Do you have engine driven refrig? What kind of room in the engine compartment?

I have a BMW 50 HP engine but am somewhat underpowered. Looking at something around 65 to 70 HP. My present engine is right at 21"
wide, 38" long, and not sure about height.
I do have a Seafrost engine driven compressor which I am hopeful the Yanmar will accomodate. Thanks

Nice to see a D50 (45 HP) is still alive. I used to be servicemanager in Norway for BMW Marine back i the 80''s. The engine to replace it with depends a lot of what kind of boat and spcially how you use the engine.If the main use is "idling" for batterycharging, cooling, in/out harbour maneuvering - go for a no-turbo engine. The Yanmar 4-syl are nice ones and seems to be running "for ever". The Volvos are running to - from time to time, if you like a camouflaged Perkins! Whatever you put in, be sure it is a brand that has a reputation of being properly "sealed" and not swetting oil!
You even have to considder rpm/gear-ratio and prop-size! If you do not get that right the change is a waste.

My company deals exclusively in BMW Marine products. The D50 happens to be my favourite engine.
Many D50''s have been replaced with 70 HP Yanmars, which I believe is a 4 cylinder. One of our customer''s cost to repower with the Yanmar was $20,000.00 US. He was happy.Yanmar dealers are slowly becoming some of our best customers. We foresee the day when we will sell a BMW D50 to replace a Yanmar. Our ''none commercial'' site is www.bmwmarine.org. In Norway Roald Solberg in Sandefjord is one of the best service shop for BMW Marine in Europe. They are closed from July 12th to July 24th for hollidays.

My only advice would be to steer away from Volvo diesels. I''m going through hell trying to find a part from them, or anywhere else on the net. Volvo isn''t returning any calls, have only 1 source in the entire state of Georgia for diesel parts, and Volvo dealers refuse to offer any information about whether other options exist!

Sorry to hear you''re having trouble with your Volvo engine.I have one on my boat and have had years of trouble free service (knock on wood) I have purchased a few parts over the years during routine maintenance and have found the following vendor very helpful. You might want to give them a call.Good luck!
