I'm looking at the Harken MKIV Unit 1 for a 1965 Alberg 35. I just bought the boat after losing mine in Sandy last fall, and it's in Wisconsin and I'll be picking it up and sailing it back to Cleveland in May, so it has been a bit difficult to get all the measurements from the marina, as the mast is way up on a rack and they don't seem particularly interested in climbing up and checking things out for me. So I think I'm down to three questions: If anyone is familiar with this boat, do you know whether the clevis pin measures 1/2" or 5/8"? Of the three toggle assembly options, do I need Eye/Jaw, Jaw/Jaw or Stud/Jaw? And for a more general question, the boat seems to have a jibstay set up a few inches behind the headstay. I don't think this is a standard setup for the Alberg, and I'm not very familiar with separate jibstays. What is the purpose of having a separate stay, and if I don't intend to use it for that purpose, can I simply remove the aft stay and install the furler on the headstay? That may well be a stupid question, but I have just moved up from a Catalina 27, so I'm scrambling to work my way up a pretty steep learning curve -thanks for your patience!

It's doubtful that there's a definite 'standard' as to how the A 35s are rigged, and one as old as this has likely been modified over the years anyway.

I don't think you want to order something like that furler without specific data from your own rig. Even trusting someone else's measurements (other than a good rigger) is high risk.

We ipgraded to this same furler 4 years ago and have been very happy with it.

We have long ling toggle assembly with 5/8 clevis. It keeps the furler drum up out of the way of anchor equipment.

Also we changed the forestay for peace of mind ( not sure what is you setup with separate jib forestay?). Also installed a halyard wrap preventer at the top of the unit.

Second the halyard wrap preventer.

I also love the Harken rachet block, in the cockpit at the end of the furling line. It makes it much easier to deploy the jib in a controlled manner (like if you want to deploy it partly furled, and it's windy), and the steady tension on the line makes the line wrap nicely around the drum.

It works best at the aft end of the cockpit, so the line does a 180 degree turn around it, then back to the cleat.

@Faster: I agree with you about trusting someone else's measurements. That said, I may be single handed on parts of the trip back, so if there's any way to bring a furler that will work up to Wisconsin with me, I'm going to try to figure it out. As I understand, the Harken system can be cut to size, so if I get unit 1 and use the standard size toggle, I can always bring down the stay and furler in Cleveland to fine tune things.

@chef2sail: That's a good point about the long link toggle. And I will probably replace the stay once I get the boat home, so if I go with the shorter toggle for the time being, swapping in the longer toggle once I get back, I'll be able to further cut down the foil on the furler to match the new rigging. As for the jibstay, I'm not sure what the setup is either. All I have to go on is a photo of the boat rigged with the previous furler on a stay that is apparently set a few inches behind the headstay.

Just a thought, but will the current luff tape (on the jib/genoa) fit the new Harken furler?

I built my own furler, the one in my book, for under $100. Has been working well for decades and several pacific crossings, now , no problem.
