Catalina 22 swing keel faring?

I just bought a C22 that has been in fresh water all its life. I took a look at the swing keel and it is in pretty good shape but I plan to use it in salt water. I will replace the keel cable and other hardware but I'd like to protect the swing keel from the water the best I can. Do I epoxy it? Fiberglass? Galvanize? Paint? What products are good for this?
Is there an aftermarket replacement keel made of stainless steel or anything like that? ~LL

Re: Catalina 22 swing keel faring?

LL: There are some great online groups/forums for Catalina 22 owners you should check out. One is on Yahoo, search groups for Catalina 22. Another is the national organization home page: catalina22.org., and another is Catalina Direct for parts, forums, etc. The yahoo site has tons of information, the national organization site has lots of specs for all 3 models, and CD has most of the replacement parts you'll ever need. I've heard there is a new swing keel that uses a stainless steel structural core surrounded by lead and a fiberglass jacket/fairing. Don't know how it performs, since I have the wing keel, but it sounds like less maintanence than the iron keel.

Shotblast and paint with zinc rich epoxy primer followed by a fairing coat if epoxy then sand that smooth and follow up with more epoxy.

Galvenising is a possibility but in the US it is gonna cost!

It is more important that you inspect the pivot pin.
