Spraying the Yanmar engine. What primer?

Good Morning guys, and gal's.
I want to put a paint job on my 32 year old yanmar 2gm 13 hp 3400 rpm engine.
It has some white chalking going on under the old paint And the grey paint is chipping off.
1) how do I prep the raw metal. steel brush? sandpaper? chemicals?
2) What do i use to prep the metal once it has been cleaned?
3) Do I prime it? If so what would you use to prime zink?

A friend has enjoyed great success when he repainted his 2GM with Rust-oleum High Temp Primer, which provides a flat gray finish, and followed with Yanmar Gray spray enamel. The Rustoleum website has good instructions on prepping to use the High Temp Primer. As I recall, he had to wait seven days between application of the primer and the top coat.

Do not use a steel brush! You will have bits of rusted metal everywhere in a few months. Use a brass brush or sandpaper. Rustoleum is great stuff!

Great point. I baught some alumun and brass brushes for lowes. I dont think they get all the white salt looking stuff off?
