Furlex furling feedback

I have a Furlex 200s model roller furling and it has been giving me trouble lately. It isn''t unrolling smoothly like it should. I know it is time to service the beast, but I don''t have a manual and don''t really have experience doing routine service on it. Does anybody know how to go about servicing this particular model furling?

Here is a URL to the Users Manual on the Selden web. I think it will give you everything you need to know: maintenance, assembly, parts, etc. I hope you have wideband access - its a 52 page manual!

I once had a similar problem with another brand of furler. My sailmaker told me to try tightening the backstay which should reduce sag in the forestay. It worked. Might be worth a try unless your rig is already tuned the way you like it.

I have a profurl furler which always worked well until one day the genoa unfurled halfway and stuck. Fortunately I had a large crew on the boat that day and we were able to alternately muscle the sail in and out until it was all the way out. When back at the dock I re-greased the bearings and the problem didn''t reoccur for a few months -- until a day I was single-handing. Luckily, I quickly stumbled on the solution: I relieved the headsail halyard tension slightly and it unrolled easily. I''m not sure if that''s your problem, but it is something easy to try.

I have had a furlex on my boat for about 10 years now. I''ve found that it always rolls smother and easier if the halyard tension is eased before rolling. an overly tight tension puts a lateral load on the swivel bearings making for a difficult furl. its also a lot better for the life of your sail to have the tension eased when not in use.
