Attaching hardware to spars.

A couple of projects on my to do list are adding lazy jacks and re-rig a reefing system. What's the best way to add needed hardware to the mast and boom?

Also, how high up the mast should the lazy jacks be mounted? Most systems I see have them up around the spreaders, do they really need to be that high?

regarding adding hardware to mast and boom: I'd drill, tap, apply tefgel and use SS machine screw. (assuming the mast and boom wall thickness is decent)

On an O'Day 23? I wouldn't bother with the lazy-jacks. Your main is small enough to make the lazy-jacks far more trouble than they're worth. I took them off of my Cal 2-27 (with about 50-60% more sail area on the main than an O'Day 23) for just that reason.

Ditto, on the need for lazy jacks on your boat. Just more lines to get in the way. Handling and stowing that main is an easy one person job.
I agree with the previous post on attaching mast hardware. Need to do that myself soon.

Chances are the wall thickness will not be great. I'd opt for rivets, or if possible, through bolting may be an option and is by far the strongest.
I've seen a lot of hardware pull out of a mast that was drilled and tapped.
