What are these things?

They appear to be related to the bilge. Any information would be appreciated, including how and why the item is to be manipulated. Thank you. Newbie here.

Seeing where that wire runs should give you the definitive answer, but it looks like some sort of a transducer for depth sounder, speed, etc..

Thank you for the reply, Siamese. The wire is incomplete.

Re: What are these things?

BTW, it is plastic, and has what appears to be a grip-like texture of lines around what seems to be a cap (all in the picture), but it also seems to be a one-piece structure that does not unscrew. I have seen these on sailboats before (without the wire) and I have to think it is a very common part on sailboats, but...

As I say, it does seem to be related to the bilge, at least due to its location

Looks like a transducer to me. If the wire goes nowhere it was probably just cut off when new instrumentation was installed. The ring looks like a locking collar.

Thanks for the reply, ReefMagnet. I suppose the idea that it's a transducer would suggest that it is unrelated to the bilge? Do you think? Any other thoughts you have on it, I'd really appreciate knowing. I know you may just be speculating, but still would like to hear it.

Re: What are these things?

I'm only guessing, but sometimes previous owners leave the old transducers in place when they replace old and failed instruments as an easy option. The transducer is simply to provide either depth or speed information to an instrument (sometimes both combined) so has nothing to do with the bilge. If you look at the spot from outside the hull, you should see the other side of the transducer protruding through which will be either flat (for depth) or a paddle wheel (for speed).

Most instruments using through hull transducers also supply blanking plugs so the transducer can be removed for servicing. If you search around on your boat, you might find the blanking plug for it if you are lucky.

Do you mean if she was out of the water? (sorry if dumb question, as I say am newbie to sailing)

I have something that looks like this but without the wire, so I bet that must be what you're talking about.

I am getting a small amount of water that occasionally comes up around the transducer, ReefMagnet, and since the transducer appears to be very nearly in line over where the bilge would be, I'd assumed it was happening as a result of a blockage in the bilge channel. But do you think it could be somehow seeping up from the transducer wire, and not the bilge?

And to add to this (since you yourself admitted to being a newbie), do not attempt to remove said transducer unless the boat is out of the water, or you have said blanking plug on hand to IMMEDIATLY install in its place. :)

EDIT: Sorry, my post was seconds late. Looks like you're gettin' it figured out...

Thank you, Rocket Science. Very valuable information for anyone to know, right there.
