No more Pirates

It’s been a full year since Somali pirates hijacked a boat – Quartz

Re: No more Pirates

Sailors in SE Asia still wary about making the passage up the Red Sea. Most going to South Africa and some shipping boats to Turkey.

Re: No more Pirates

I am glad that the only pirates we have in Narragansett bay are the weekend party kind...

Re: No more Pirates

The pirates are still out there.. and with larger "mother ships" are ranging further from base. In reading, it seems the only reason a yacht has not been overtaken by them is that the yachts are avoiding the Red Sea and going the long way.

I think this is the real case. The commercial guys have armed security and can in most cases fend them off or out run them. Yachts just don't go there.

Of course, yachts were never their primary targets anyway. They can get a much bigger payday from ransoming a ship filled with cargo than they can from auctioning off a yachting family.

That doesn't mean they won't take them as the opportunity permits, but I believe yachts have always been a small percentage of the vessels seized.
