Cyclical Loading

I realize that SailNet's owners won't like me driving traffic to another site, but I think there's some really interesting stuff at Attainable Adventure Cruising on cyclical loading of boats under sail and wear and tear of their gear. I found these posts dealing with some basic physics and engineering to be informative and interesting:

Analysis Of The Loads On A Boat Sailing Offshore

Cycle Loading—8 Tips for Boat and Gear Buying

The second post above deals with tips on gear and materials which I think is particularly informative, especially the parts about residual strength of older hulls. The chart below warmed the cockles of my heart. (BR is a steel boat who has seen a few cyclical loads in her life at sea).

PS -- Those thinking of buying a hull to rehab should not miss the link to "Poor Stupid Bob" in Tip #8
