Re: Hot stuffing box...
First, sorry for not taking pictures of the stuffing box this weekend. I was too busy taking pictures of our baby and my lovely wife out on this windy blustery weekend on the boat. I assure you the stuffing box pretty normal looking from the front end.
I discussed the issue with the yard yesterday after running it for 2 days at half throttle and the box temp was 120F. He hemmed and hawed and kept repeating the problem that there are just a lot of rings in there (12) which makes that much more friction and that much less water movement. He decided to talk with his shaft expert and call me back today, which he did.
The shaft expert guy had seen boxes like mine and apparently they weren't made for many years because they would get hot and cause problems. Turns out 12 rings is not better than 3. He said the best solution was to put some kind of spacer/bushing in the back to take up the extra space and then put in 3-4 rings of stuff. That requires a haul-out and pulling the shaft and since the yard JUST PUT ME IN THE WATER they aren't super keen on doing that again right now.
The suggested interim fix is to use a teflon impregnated kevlar stuffing matereal + teflon grease and that will allow me to run cool. He suggested taking 4 rings of flax packing out from the original 12 and replacing them with kevlar but I suggested that since I took out 2 rings this weekend and replaced them with nothing and still run at 120F at 1/2 throttle that they should take out quite a few more. In "theory" the aft most stuffing rings will be in contact with the most water and stay cool.
We'll see if this works. I am happy that they've started consulting other experts when they can't seem to answer the question and that they're willing to come to my slip and make it right quickly. Hopefully this will work and next haulout I can get some of those bushing things put in there and forevermore only have 3-4 rings of packing like the rest of the world.
Anyone ever heard of kevlar stuffing box packing? That's a new one by me...
I have a sauna on my boat, therefore I win.
