Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

I have a low hour Yanmar 3gm30f w/sd20 that I would like to install on my Volvo MD11 engine bed. Has anyone done this job? I know Beta makes custom feet to fit an MD11 engine bed, but I can't find anything information about Yanmar mounts.

I have a few options, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has made this change.

Options are:

1. Find proper Yanmar Engine/saildrive bed - ($1200 is too much at the moment)
2. Find custom feet to fit the old Volvo bed.
3. Customize old engine bed somehow to make the Yanmar fit.

Any help/info is appreciated.

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

We changed out an Atomic gas engine to a Volvo some years back.. the beds were at a different angle and spacing than the Volvo required. As the beds were wider, we cut them down to the correct angle, and installed fairly heavy Aluminum 'angle iron' inside each bed to achieve the correct spacing. In the end it worked out fine, but was a bit of a nasty job, esp the cutting of the solid beds.

Anything is possible with enough ingenuity and courage!!

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

Our boat used to have an A-4 and it now has a 3gm30f.
Two large pieces of angle iron were bolted to the old fiberglass runners and some after market engine mounts were used to mount the engine. The mounts offer a bit of adjustment for alignment. Seems to work quite well, with little to no vibration.
I've put Chevy engines in Fords, so anything is possible.

ANY metal fabricator will be able to make the new brackets to fit the yanmar engine and mountings to fit the engine bed..
After all it is just a case of making 4 l shaped brackets.....

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

not sure I under stand what you are planning. you are swapping in a yanmar with a SD20 sail drive and you currently have a volvo on a SD20 sail drive?

... Oops.... missed that part.. changing to a saildrive from shaft/strut? Adapting to pre-exisiting SD? Much different job!!

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

Oh, sorry I missed the sd part of the question. Thats a whole different ball game. I don't know if a yanmar will bolt up to a saildrive? It may require a bellhousing adapter.
Never been a big fan of saildrives.

Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

Sorry I didn't explain enough.

I removed a Volvo MD11c w/ 110s sail drive and now I'd like to install a Yanmar 3GM30F w/ SD 20 saildrive.

I'd just really like to make it work without forking out a bunch more cash. My departure date is less than 90 days away and I'm starved for $$.

I'll try and post a picture of both beds.

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

Here are the 2 beds side by side, Volvo on the left Yanmar on the right.

I'm back and forth on how to make this work, so i was just hoping someone else has already done this. I'll have to drill and tap new holes for the saildrive but I should be able to make that part work. Its the engine feet I'm having troube with.

Re: Yanmar mounted on Volvo Bed

So.... you're grinding out the old bed, reglassing in the new? or trying to mate the new drive with the old bed? If the latter, I dunno... looks like different SD bolt pattern and even a different sized hull cutout..

Could be a challenge..
