Autohelm 4000

Hi. I have an autohelm 4000 and the controller unit has stopped working - no power. I've reviewed the guidance here and have checked the power cable coming out of the unit. After adjusting the cable, the power was restored to the unit. The turn to "+" buttons work (both of them) but the "-" buttons do not work. Any thoughts? Any suggestions on who might be able to repair the unit or anyone out there have one they are looking to sell? I've checked ebay, but have found nothing.

Many thanks, in advance, for whatever guidance you might be able to provide.

Doug

Re: Autohelm 4000

Autohelm was rolled into Raymarine. They have an excellent service department - Raymarine Marine Electronics for Boats and Maritime Applications

Re: Autohelm 4000

Thanks for that. All indications that I've seen are that they have stopped supporting the 4000.

Re: Autohelm 4000

I had a similar problem with my Autohelm 3000 last year. I contacted Capt Dan In Durango. Turned out my unit needed a new internal compass and a few other minor repairs. He was very reasonable and did quick service for me.
I highly recommend him. You can contact me for his email address as I am unable to list it here according to Sailnet rules.

Mike - that sounds great. Thank you. Unfortunately, I cannot send you a private message because I do not have sufficient posts on this board. Are you in a position where you can send me a message?

Re: Autohelm 4000

Thanks for the info. I have an Autohelm 1000 that I've been tinkering with. At first it didn't work at all, but I discovered some bad brushes and a lot of corrosion on the brush springs of the motor. After cleaning them up, it sort of works... just sporadically. I sometimes have to give the extension arm a little nudge to get the motor going, but all the other functions work correctly. Any ideas on what to check next? A source for a new replacement motor?

Thanks...
Barry

Re: Autohelm 4000

I also have a dead 4000 control head. They are indeed no longer supported or serviced and the newer controls are not backwards compatible with the 4000 wheel unit. My control head is damaged because of moisture breach. You can see standing water in the LCD display!

Re: Autohelm 4000

Barry - my malfunction is with the control unit, not the motor. I am going with Mike / Jim's advice and have already reached out to Captain Dan. I am hopeful.

David - with respect to your question, I have the older unit that does not have an LCD. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.
