Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

for the topping lift would be my first guess. Roller reefing booms had something similar but yours does not appear to be one of those. What do you have main sheet control?

I'm with denise- your topping lift should be shackled there, rather than shackling to your outhaul

It's 5 o'clock somewhere:

Furthermore, it looks like someone chose to use an anchor swivel above the shackle. Can't help but wonder why.

Three votes for topping lift strap...I have one just like it except it's not quite as badly bent.

That explains things perfectly. And I will get that shackle replaced asap. A so-called expert hooked things up that way.

Thanks for turning on the ole lightbulb.

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

That looks like a Catalina 25 boom. If it is then that is where the mainsheet used to be attached. Maybe your boat had an aftermarket traveler added to the front of the cockpit and switched to mid-boom sheeting?

The topping lift is mounted to it's normal place for a Catalina 25. There should be too holes, the forward one is for the outhaul and the rear one is for the topping lift.

On Catalina-Capri-25s.org you can find original manuals for these boats that show you what every single little part on the boat is.

I'm no longer participating on SailNet.

My boat is a Sundance 23. Very rare. Tried to find specs, with no luck. Was built in Michigan, ending ip in Oregon.

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

That crossed my mind, too. Unsure of the setup rigging. It would have to attach to the toe rail, the way the boat is setup now.

going to try the topping lift idea and your idea too. Can be used both ways.thanks guys and gals.
