Re: battery availability at sam's club

If they say "East Penn" then they are really Deka batteries and the SAME EXACT marine batteries sold at West Marine for often less than HALF the price.

Here is an example:

West Marine sells that SAME EXACT battery, with a different sticker, for 309.00 and they call it the Sea Volt Deep Cycle AGM 105...

And the flooded group 31

Just looked up the current WM pricing vs. my local Sam's Club on the group 31 wet cell.. Holy CRAP!

Remember, these are the SAME EXACT BATTERIES, MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND ROLLING OFF THE SAME ASSEMBLY LINE. The ONLY difference is the STICKER...

Sams Club Duracell = Group 29/31 (Deka DC31) 105Ah Battery $84.97

West Marine = Group 31 (Deka DC31) 105Ah Battery $249.99

That is a $165.02 premium to have a West Marine sticker on your battery...

A 315 Ah bank of group 31 flooded batteries:

West Marine = 3 X $249.99 = $749.97

Sam's Club = 3 X $84.97 = $254.91

A 315 Ah bank of group 31 AGM's:

West Marine = 3 X $309.99 = $929.97

Sam's Club = 3 X $166.32 = $498.96

Re: battery availability at sam's club

I bought a deep cycle marine wet-cell battery at Costco for around $100. It seems to work perfectly well, although I often wish it had a pretty graphic of a sailboat on it, so I could be assured it is a real "marine" battery.

I can make you a sticker with a pretty sailboat for $100.00, more if you want multi color.

Old thread, similar subject: Sam's Club Battery

Re: battery availability at sam's club

Cabela's has AGM batteries on sale right now. Group 24 for $130, 27 for $147, 30H for $168. I got two delivered for $20 in shipping, about what it would cost me to drive there and back.

Someone who doesn't have a Costco or Sam's Club membership may find this useful.

I have two Group 24 ones that I just got, I can check who manufactured them tonight if someone is interested. Online reviews were pretty good, so I took a chance and ordered them.

Costco does not have AGM Group 24 batteries for $80 last time I checked. Lead acid ones are under $80, but those are under $80 just about anywhere.

Are the Johnson Control batteries not as good as the East Penn? I don't think that the East Penn's are sold in CA costco/walmarts. Certainly could be wrong...

They are not generally considered "as good" as the East Penn product but are not horrible either. Johnson Controls is a huge company and has outsourced a lot of its battery production out of the USA.

Deka, Trojan, US Battery, Crown, Superior etc. all still produce their batteries in the US. Deka / East Penn builds a very good battery at a fair price (unless you get it at West Marine). IMHO US Battery is building one of the best batteries, also at a fair price. Unfortunately I don't have a local US Battery distributor so getting them is a royal PITA....
