I wouldn't do it, but you'll need to tie two of them. One for your legs and another for your chest. You essentially step on the lower loop, stand up, push the one attached to chest as high as you can, hang from it, then pull the lower one up until your legs are bent as high as possible, stand up and repeat. Miserable!
I prefer that the prusik knot be used as a safety to prevent accidental descent, rather than climb with it. If you're single handed, mast steps are a good idea. Again, the prusik can be your safety.

Key thing with a prussic is to make sure that the ratio between the diameter of your prussic line and the line you are climbing is correct, if your prussic is too thick then it won't grip. I've used them for years in rock climbing, and been up the mast a couple of times, personally I'd trust them over a mechanical system.
It's easier if the line you are climbing (typically a halyard) is held fairly taught.
Personaly, I would invest in a second generation Petzl GriGri at minimum, then use a prusic on a footloop to climb the main (the GriGri locking in the gain), and a prusic on the Jib Halyard as backup.. FWIW
A couple of ascenders make the climb easier than prussics. Second the rec for a Gri Gri.
The system works well but not necessarily easy unless you are in good shape (I'm 62 and it's a workout getting up our 55' mast).
OK, I admit, all my prusik climbing was over 20 yrs ago but I really did climb over 1000' on prusiks from Golundrinas (deepest pit in the world). Still, prusiks are so cheap, basic and easy AND they work on wet muddy rope when mechanicals do not.
