There is also another product used when making sails called "basting tape" which is very sticky on both sides. It is used with regular sail cloth but could also be used with adhesive tape to add extra stickiness.
Frankly, sail tape or any adhesive sail repair material is really supposed to be stitched; at least around the edges of the repair.
Sailrite.com has been a great resource to me for the hand sail repairs I did this winter. I hand sewed a piece of pre-folded 3" sail tape over the leech line of our genoa. Couldn't have done it without basting tape and advice from:
