attaching letters and insignias

I recently installed two Catalina 22 insignias on my main, and they are already peeling off after the first sail. I think one problem was that I installed them on brand spanking new sails, so that after the initial stretch the adhesive backing couldn't hold them in place. I'm planning on taking the boat out about 40 more hours to let all the initial stretching be over and done with and then try installing another set. Is there an additional adhesive I can apply to the backs of the insignias for better hold? Can they safely be sewn on? The sail is 5.53 oz Dacron.

Yes, you can sew on most insignia cloths. Common practice.

Re: attaching letters and insignias

The original mainsail on our 43 y/o Newport died and we got a used one for a similar Catalina. Over the winter, the admiral stripped off the old numbers and insignia and "made" it a duplicate of our original. She glued them on in place then hand sewed them each. Took awhile but they look great.

Re: attaching letters and insignias

the logo should stick to a brand new sail. there should be no reason to sew them on. the sails do not stretch enough for the logo to come off. the adhesive may have been old or the sail was not clean. clean with soap and water and let dry before trying to install them. some lofts use baby powder on the sewing floor to make the sails slide easily when sewing and if this is not washed off the logo will not stick.
