Mounting Rope Clutches

I purchased two Spinlock XAS Double Rope Clutches on e-bay and will be mounting them in the next few of days. It looks like there is a place for an O-ring to be placed around the mounting holes between the block and deck. Also tag on part says not to use caulking. Not sure what I should use. I will be mounting them in front of the cabin top winches far enough forward to clear the winch handle and centered on the RH side of the winch. Can you guys verify my thinking or provide additional information. Thanks.

Orings do work well, I always use a bit of sealant as well just in case just be careful not to use too much, a little dab will do ya.

Re: Mounting Rope Clutches

I second Butyl tape... but I should head my own recommendations... like a lemming, I used 4200 on my cabintop cams, (which is fine), but I had a nice roll of that butyl tape I've used for a bunch of other things already (purchased from a member from here)... and honestly I should have used it instead.

The XAS clutches were on my long term wish list... I'd love to see a picture once you get them in.

Re: Mounting Rope Clutches

I just installed some XAS's a few weeks ago with butyl tape (from MaineSail). One thing I've found - when you make the cone of butyl around the base of the bolt (per MaineSails' awesome instructions) make sure you don't put so much butyl on that it squeezes down onto any threads that the tightening nut will need. Butyl does not flow easily, so if you tighten a nut over butyl the nut will seize on you. I've sheered off bolts that had butyl on the threads..

Re: Mounting Rope Clutches

butyl tape, 4200, or O-rings all work. Chances are you'll need to remove them at some point, so O-ring or butyl is your best bet.
