Clean/Polish Painted Hull before Applying Graphics?
 
I ordered the new graphics for our boat. The name should fit on the side of the hull and leave room between the "dock rash" and the aft end of the boat so any new paint can be feathered in. I'd love to "just" re-paint the hull and not have to worry about the dock rash, but with everything else that's going on, that's not really an option. So, what kind of prep work do I need to do to the area where the new graphics will be applied?

I've read MainSail's thread about polishing gelcoat, but it says that it won't work for painted hulls.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Not sure you would want to polish where the new graphics are going, clean it well but then wipe it down with something that will ensure there is no wax or anything g that would effect the bond.

Maybe some denatured alcohol or something

Should just be smooth, clean, and dry. I'm putting my boat name on tomorrow morning. I think the instructions said to spray with window cleaner and dry.

If you think there is any wax on it, regular dish detergent will take it off with no effort. Otherwise, just clean and dry will do the job.

I would prep the surface with MEK or acetone.

David,
I was afraid acetone might eat away at the Awlgrip-like paint. Glass cleaner was BoatUS's recommendation last time.

MEK is better because it evaporates more quickly than acetone. Either one, just to a quick wipe that is not overly wet and it's fine. Glass cleaner may be okay some spots but there tends to be residue from a wet exhaust on the stern. Even Awlgrip says its okay as long as you don't let it sit wet.
