That story is incredible. Hats off to Chevron for sending down the divers, even if they only thought they were going to recovery bodies- time was of the essence.
Would not work. See above post as to how rebreather works. If it did work, diving bells as used years ago would have permitted the divers to stay down much longer.
Good thing the divers had the proper equipment for the rescue, and had the knowledge to decompress the man- bringing him directly to the surface would have killed him. Great job.
Scrub the CO2 out and re-use the remaining oxygen.
