A perfect example what "the lure of the sea" can do to someone.

It turned out that a "friend" now a very well known yacht designer of fast boats, had "borrowed" the boat for a sail without asking. Monday morning, he was working for me, I asked him about it as he had borrowed the boat on another occasion with our permission. He admitted to taking it and I let him know calmly that this was not cool. 30 minutes later my partner's wife came in the door and ripped the guy a new one in a very loud and shrill voice. Justice served. I never quite looked at that guy the same way after that.
Somehow the words "you're fired" would seem appropriate. You "boat pros" must be a laid-back lot.

That leads me to wonder is there a practical way to lock/secure a mooring pennant to the the boat. A bike lock through the pennant eye and a d-bolt. They obviously could cut the pennant, but it would slow a theft.

If you permanently secure a boat, you may make it impossible for the harbor master or others to render assistance in an emergency without you there. Eg... taking on water, collision that holes the topsides.

If you can center and lock the rudder, that would still allow a tow, but should dissuade a joy rider.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Good points. Probably the best security is that no one knows how to operate my 34 year old boat. I'm mostly paranoid of people that would just let it loose just to be randomly malicious. I guess that could happen anywhere.

Confess, Julie, you thought about it at some time in your life, didn't you?
Me so guilty too...

Sounds like a case of joy-sailing to me. Guy should be punished by working on the owner's boat for a month.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

I caught a guy on my boat once . He got the help he needed in the Critical Care ward at St. Mary's.
