Has anyone here done any kite videos?
YouTube is full of folks using kites to capture their vessels underway. I want to try this, this summer. I think I have the proper kite selected and I scored an Emerson HD ActionCam at Big Lots for like $40.00. Its quite similar to a Go Video w/o the fish eye effect. Anyway, I'm not sure how to mount the camera onto the kite. It needs to be steady and I think needs to follow the line to the boat for best results. The mounting hardware I see online looks unnecessarily complicated and/or pricey. If you have any experiences, tips or tricks I'd love to hear them. Perhaps you could post your vids if they aren't on YouTube already.

Oh - the gyros also allow control, part of upgrading this year will be a new gopro with the wireless connection to see what I'm shooting.

I started with 40 bucks and the pivacet then kept adding over the years. Recently I noticed that 100 bucks will get you a pretty good looking stabalization rig rather than building one yourself, hence the thoughts to upgrade.

I have a GoPro Black edition that I may try this with. It does have wifi built in and you can preview to ensure your aim is correct.

Which kite are you using?

Nice stuff onecalledtom. Love the different angles. As far as kites are concerned, this is what I'm looking at.

Any thoughts?

Re: Has anyone here done any kite videos?
kites probably good (brooxes was where I got a load of my info). I will say that oversizing the line is a good idea - you're going to need to include boat speed in there so 15kts gust == 20kts on the kite. Soft kites seem likely easier to slide past backstays, mainsheets and radar arches or whatever else you find downwind.

Have fun!

I've tried this, but need to get a better rig. I made my own picavet, used small eyebolts instead of micro blocks and it doesn't stay level enough. Also has too much swing. I also need to sit down long enough to learn how to edit. Of course the ultimate video will be of the boat sailing in clear water with dolphins at the bow.
