Spreader Tip

Hey gang. Got the boat rigged up and the darn spreader tip broke. I can order one from seattle (which i will) but I doubt it will be here in time for the weekend, and I am itchin to go out. The boat is 22'

So, Firstly can i sail safely without the spreader in action?
Secondly, I thought about connecting two dowel rods perpendicular to eachother, tucking one in to the spreader (its round) then bolting it, drilling out the other one with a 'slot' to hold the shroud and affixing some tape. think this would work for a weekend? Any thoughts appreciated.

Re: Spreader Tip

I think your dowel idea should work. Just make sure it is sturdy (I would use strong hardwood, like oak). There are some serious forces at play up there when tacking.
