My Son's First Boat

Great day today, ironically it is Independence Day, but after a month or so of looking at quite a few boats I found the one that fit the bill for my 18 year old son. I was originally looking at a Cal 21 and a MacGregor 22 but the more I thought about it I came to the realization that he really needed to start smaller and learn to not only sail, but be able to rig a boat, do some basic maintenance and if all goes well learn to sell a boat and buy one on his own. I came across an American Fiberglass 16 yesterday, contacted the owner, drove 4 hours and found a real nice and cared for daysailer. After an hour or so of looking her over and a little negotiation I ended up buying her, pulling her home and surprising my son with his first boat. Tomorrow we are taking her to the lake and I get to experience his first sail as a boat owner.

Nice! I learned on an American 14.5 - they are great boats. Good luck with it!

Re: My Son's First Boat

Congrats to you both!
Although, frankly, I'm not sure how he is gonna become a true boat owner on that boat- it doesn't look like there is near enough gear that is worn out, busted, broken, about to break or just plain wrong to fully encompass the boat ownership experience. well done.

Re: My Son's First Boat

Congratulations! Can you imagine him helling the story 30 years from now about how he got his first boat?
