Self Steering by Boom and Bungee?

Does anyone have any experience using the boom to self-steer? I've read a few books and articles on using sails to self-steer, and the boom rig with bungee reverse pressure looks like it could work. I'm planning a trip to Hawaii and not sure if I want to fork out the funds for a windvane. My boat is 13 tons, though, so not light on the water.

Re: Self Steering by Boom and Bungee?

I have experimented with self-steering using sails based on John Letcher' book. According to this book you use different approaches on the wind and off - using the jib for one and the main for the other. It worked, sort of, but two comments. This was on a one ton, centerboard boat, so light, but not particularly easy to sail. Your boat is much larger, but likely steers better. Also, I was just having fun not attempting an offshore passage. Before setting out you need lots of experimenting, including in strong winds.

There is nothing more important on such a passage, than reliable, robust self-steering... Also, you may wind up wanting to do much of that passage with twin headsails, not sure how the boom would come into play in that case...

Here's a case of some Zen Master thinking he could sail to Hawaii without a self-steering setup... Gotta love the line "When does the magazine fun start?" (grin)

For passagemaking, a good windvane will be some of the best money you'll ever spend on your boat... I'd suggest trying to cut back your budget elsewhere...
